Hi, I’m Amber Gustafson.

And I’m writing a book.

In 2023, my mom became ill with dementia. I stepped down from a career I loved to care for her. After she passed away, I realized that even a long life can be too short if you don’t follow the inspiration in your heart.

I decided it was time to write my family’s story.

In the 1980’s my parents were farmers. When the Farm Crisis hit, we lost everything and in a desperate attempt to recover financially and emotionally, because they had no where else to turn, my parents joined a cult — a cult that sold soap.

That cult was called Amway - short for “The American Way.”

But Amway wasn’t the answer. Instead it drove my family deeper into poverty and increased the challenges we faced.

In 2018, I ran for Iowa Senate and told our family’s story with my mom’s help.

My book is a story of one family’s resilience in the face of tremendous challenges. It is a story of bad decisions, wishful thinking, scams and fraud and of the giant corporations and their governmental partners that collude to keep the working class exhausted, anxious and financially strapped.

When I am not writing, I am a busy advocate for the same issues that motivated me to run for office. From using my social media platform to work for change, to attending events and speaking to the media, to lobbying at the state and US Capitol, I find joy in speaking up for people like my parents and advocating for a better world.
